The Canada Greener Homes Initiative is a recently announced program by the federal government of Canada that encourages Canadians to make their homes more green and energy efficient. With the Canada Greener Homes Grant, Canadian homeowners are eligible for up to $5,000 on approved energy-efficient home retrofits, including solar panels.

Additionally, through this initiative, if you want to buy batteries to store the solar energy produced by your PV system, you might get a grant for some or all of the cost through the climate resiliency grants.

As askatchewan’s top-rated solar panel installers , we’ll give you all the necessary information so that you can benefit from this grant. Keep reading to find out more about it.

What Is The Greener Homes Initiative?

It is a $2.6 billion dollar program announced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Natural Resources Minister Seamus O’Regan that offers to pay homeowners for energy-saving renovations and home upgrades.

The federal government aims to make 700,000 houses more energy efficient within the next 7 years through this program. This project aims to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gasses, reduce energy bill costs, and achieve greater energy efficiency.

The Canadian government aspires to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. By supporting this initiative, you will not only have the opportunity to switch to renewable energy but also to positively impact the economy and the environment.

Trudeau said;

“As a country, every effort counts to keep our air clean and our environment healthy,”

Eligible Criteria

To be eligible for the grant for your solar system, one must fulfill these requirements.

  • All equipment must be bought in Canada.
  • Only orders placed from Canadian distributors are accepted for online purchases.
  • The system must include one or more PV panels and inverters (if necessary) that are CSA-certified.
  • The overall system peak power capacity must be 1.0 kW DC or more.
  • A copy of the letter of approval or authorization for interconnection from the regional electrical or building authority is necessary for a grid-tied system.

How The Canada Greener Homes Grant Works

Pre-Evaluation Phase: You will receive up to $600 in reimbursement for the cost of the compulsory pre and post-retrofit evaluations. You must proceed with at least one retrofit suggested by your energy advisor and complete the entire Greener Homes Grant procedure to receive reimbursement.

Retrofits Phase: By completing multiple projects suggested by your energy advisor, you can receive a grant of up to $5,000 in total reimbursement for energy retrofits. Keep in mind that the total maximum reimbursement for the Canada Greener Homes Grant cannot exceed $5,000.

Switching To Solar Is Now More Affordable

Home residential solar panel systems can get $1,000 per kWh and up to $5,000 for residential solar panels. Additionally, the Canada Greener Home Grant offers incentives of up to $1,000 for home battery systems that are connected to solar panel systems. Batteries must be used in conjunction with an energy-efficient retrofit funded by the Canadian Greener Homes Grants program.

Along with the Canada Greener Homes Grant, the federal government also introduced the interest-free Canada Greener Homes Loan, which offers up to $40,000 in credit.
